Three thirds of Vietnam consists of mountains and hills. The highest mountain is Fansipan which is 3145 m.a.s.l. Bordered by Laos and Cambodia in the mountains, Vietnam has one of the longest coast towards South China Sea and The Philipines.

The capital of Vietnam is Hanoi, but the largest city is Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon). Other large cities are Hai Phong and Da Nang. Major rivers include the Mekong in the south and the Red River of the North. You can’t speak of high or low season as the climate varies from region to region, and when it’s wet and cold in one region, it is warm and sunny in the other.

Vietnamese food is very tasty and varied. Vietnam has up to 350 traditional dishes that range from snake and seafood to good vegetarian dishes. Fish is also an important ingredient in the Vietnamese cuisines, and almost all dishes eaten with rice and noodles. Visit also the Mekong River – the nine dragons river. When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

Since Vietnam stretches from north to south, the best time to visit depends on the region:

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay): best from October to April, with cooler and drier weather.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): ideal between February and August.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): best from December to April, during the dry season.
