Malaysia’s many national parks, coral reefs and beautiful islands invite you to beautiful diving, exciting island-leaping and hiking in the jungle. Many start the trip with a couple of nights in Kula Lumpur and get a fair amount of big city life before the journey goes on to fine-grained beaches, beautiful national parks and the wildlife of Malaysia.

Borneo has amazing fine-grained beaches, pleasant waters and beautiful national parks. Visit the island’s hot springs, see the endangered orangutan and dive where Jacques Cousteau once appeared. Borneo is the nature lover’s paradise as large parts of the island are still untouched and unpopulated so the biodiversity has flourished.

Malaysia has several sights on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The capital Kuala Lumpur is located on the Malacka Peninsula, surrounded by mountains. The city is famous for its skyscrapers and shopping opportunities. Nearby are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Lenggong Valley, similar to a large outdoor museum – filled with cave paintings, skeletal findings and stone tools, weapons and jewelry. Just outside the northwestern coast lies the island of Pulau Langkawi with its white beaches and dramatic waterfalls attracts travellers seekiing tranquillity and relaxation.

Frequently asked questions about Malaysia

How long is the flight from Stockholm to Malaysia?

A flight from Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia’s capital) usually takes around 13 to 16 hours, including one layover. There are currently no direct flights, but major airlines like Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Emirates offer convenient one-stop routes via cities like Doha, Istanbul, or Dubai.

When is the best time to visit Malaysia?

That depends on the region:

  • Western Malaysia (e.g. Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi): best from December to April.
  • Eastern Malaysia (e.g. Perhentian Islands, Borneo): best from April to September.
Malaysia has a tropical climate year-round, but rainfall patterns vary by region.
What can I expect from Malaysian food and culture?

Malaysian cuisine is a rich fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian flavors. Signature dishes include nasi lemak (coconut rice with sambal), laksa (spicy noodle soup), and roti canai (flaky flatbread).
Culturally, Malaysia is highly diverse, with Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians living side by side. Respect for local customs is important—dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and remove your shoes before entering temples and mosques.
