Mallorca is an island we are always happy to return to. And perhaps it is the variety that makes us enjoy it so much. Of course, there are beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, but also charming villages, dramatic mountains, excellent restaurants and, of course, Palma – a city we never tire of.

On our latest trip, we decided not to stay in just one place. Instead, we combined Colònia de Sant Jordi, Port de Sóller and Palma, giving us the opportunity to experience three very different sides of Mallorca. It also turned out to be a perfect example of how we at Nygren & Lind Travel Agency like to travel ourselves: personal, varied and with enough time to truly experience the places we visit.

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Relaxed days in Southern Mallorca

We started our journey in southern Mallorca, in Colònia de Sant Jordi, a small coastal town with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. It is noticeably quieter here than in many of Mallorca’s larger holiday resorts, which is something we really appreciated.

One of the main reasons to come here is, of course, the beaches. Es Trenc is the best known, with its pale sand and almost Caribbean-like turquoise water. But we were just as taken with Platja d’es Dolç, a smaller beach within easy walking distance of the village and harbour. One day, we also made our way to Santanyí and its popular Saturday market. This is exactly the kind of little excursion we like to include in a trip – wandering between the market stalls, browsing small shops and stopping at a café whenever the mood takes us.

Colònia de Sant Jordi is particularly well suited to those looking for beautiful beaches and a relaxed start to their holiday. You do not need to do very much here. And that is part of its charm.

Port de Sóller – Seaside living with the Tramuntana mountains as a backdrop

After a few nights, we continued north to Port de Sóller. This is one of those places in Mallorca that is difficult not to like. The small harbour is beautifully framed by the Tramuntana Mountains, with restaurants and cafés lining the waterfront and boats coming and going across the bay.

We think it is worth giving yourself a few days here. Take the morning as it comes, stroll along the waterfront, go for a swim, enjoy a long lunch and linger over a glass of wine as the sun begins to set behind the mountains. But we also recommend leaving the sun lounger behind for a day.

The Tramuntana Mountains are an important part of the Mallorca experience, and Port de Sóller makes an excellent base for exploring them. A boat trip along the coast towards Sa Calobra is another wonderful way to see the island from an entirely different perspective.

And then, of course, there is the charming old tram that runs between Port de Sóller and Sóller. A little touristy? Absolutely. But also very charming – and something we think everyone should experience at least once.

Palma – The perfect ending to our Mallorca journey

We ended our trip in Palma, which provided the perfect contrast after our days by the sea. Palma is a city we genuinely enjoy. It is small enough to explore almost entirely on foot, yet filled with restaurants, shopping, culture and charming neighbourhoods waiting to be discovered.

We stayed in the heart of the Old Town and simply let each day unfold at its own pace.

A walk past La Seu Cathedral, a little shopping, lunch whenever we came across somewhere that looked inviting, and then back out into the city again in the evening. Food is a big part of the Palma experience. You will find everything from small tapas bars and local neighbourhood restaurants to some truly excellent fine dining. Santa Catalina is an area we are always happy to return to for a more relaxed evening, with plenty of atmosphere and a lively local scene.
