Girona, one of the most enchanting cities in Catalonia, Spain, is a destination that truly touches the heart of every traveler. Known for its cobbled streets, colorful houses along the Onyar River and impressive cathedral, Girona offers a unique combination of rich history, heritage and a vibrant contemporary culture.

Located just an hour from Barcelona by train, Girona is a perfect destination for those who want to experience the genuine Catalonia. Here you are greeted by a more relaxed atmosphere, where every corner offers stories from the past. Stroll through the maze-like alleys of the old town, have a coffee in a square in the sun and discover the city’s hidden treasures – all within walking distance.

Historical experiences in Girona’s old town

Girona offers one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centres. In Barri Vell, you are surrounded by thousand-year-old walls, Roman ruins and Gothic and Romanesque buildings. The pride of the city, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, towers high above the city and impresses with its magnificent staircase and the world’s widest Gothic nave.

Did you miss “Game of Thrones”? The city hasn’t – several of its most iconic scenes were filmed here, adding an extra dimension to your walks through the city. For stunning views, take a walk along the city walls – Passeig de la Muralla – and gaze out over Girona, the valley and the mountains on the horizon.

Excursion from Girona to Cadaqués – meet the world of Salvador Dalí

From Girona, it is easy to get to the charming coastal village of Cadaqués, which is about two hours away by car. The beautiful road there winds through rolling landscapes before reaching the sea – and what was once Salvador Dalí’s creative sanctuary.

In nearby Portlligat is Dalí’s house and studio, today a fascinating museum. Here you get to step straight into the artist’s world, with everything from bizarre installations to personal details preserved just as he left them. After your visit, you can wander the whitewashed alleys of Cadaqués or sit down at a restaurant overlooking the sea.

Tailor-made trips to Girona and Catalonia

Girona and its surroundings are perfect for those who are looking for something more than a regular weekend getaway. Do you want to combine Girona with swimming in the Costa Brava, cycling in the mountains or perhaps dining experiences in the countryside? We plan your trip with care and local knowledge.

Frequently asked questions about Girona

What is the easiest way to get to Girona?

There are several convenient ways to get to Girona from Barcelona. The fastest option is to take a high-speed train (AVE), which departs from Barcelona Sants and reaches Girona in about 40 minutes. For those travelling by car, it takes about 1.5 hours via the AP-7 motorway. Girona also has its own airport – Girona-Costa Brava Airport – with some direct flights from Europe, especially during the summer season. The airport is only 20 minutes from the city center by car or bus. In most cases, the easiest way is to fly to Barcelona Airport, and then go to Girona, by train, car or bus.

What are the main attractions in Girona?

Girona has a lot to offer in a compact area. Must-sees include the stately Cathedral of Santa Maria, with the world’s widest Gothic nave, and the city’s medieval city walls that offer stunning views. The Jewish Quarter (El Call) is among the best-preserved in Europe and provides a fascinating insight into the city’s history. The River Onyar with its colorful houses creates an iconic view, and you should also stroll across the bridges – especially the Pont de Ferro, designed by Gustave Eiffel.

When is the best time to visit Girona?

The best time to visit Girona is during spring and autumn – especially April to June and September to October. Then the weather is mild, nature is green and the city is not as full of tourists. A hot tip is to visit in May during the Temps de Flors, when the whole city literally blooms in a fantastic flower festival.

Is it possible to do day trips from Girona?

Absolute. Girona is a perfect starting point for day trips. A popular tour goes to Cadaqués, a beautiful white coastal town where Salvador Dalí lived – you can visit his home in Portlligat. Other parts of the Costa Brava are also easily accessible, such as Tossa de Mar or Calella de Palafrugell. For nature lovers, an excursion to the La Garrotxa volcanic area or a bike ride along the old railway route “Via Verde” is recommended.

Is Girona a good city for families with children?

Yes, Girona is very suitable for families with children. The city centre is car-free in many places, which makes it safe to walk with children. There are several parks, playgrounds, and exciting environments to explore, such as the city walls and the old towers. In addition, both beaches and nature experiences are close at hand – perfect for day trips with children.
